They used slide rules and abacuses. Enclosed here are freeware versions of those "ancient" tools. Slide Rule illustrates the parts and functions of a Versalog slide rule produced by the Frederick Post Company and intended for solving both mathematics and engineering problems. Both the slide and cursor can be controlled with individual slide bars. Either the front or rear sides of the slide rule can be viewed. For easier reading, the values are also displayed in a series of individual windows and change as either or both the slide or cursor are moved. In addition, you'll find a virtual abacus. This simulation is based on a Japanese version that was adapted from the Chinese approximately 20 centuries after its creation in 500 BC. Its main function is to convert linear/polyline features in the raster images to corresponding vector drawing files. WinTopo is useful, especially when you need to edit portion of the image, and yet do not have the original drawing file. It provides both famous Zhang-Shuen and Stentiford Thinning methods as part of the preprocess for vectorization. The product is suitable for conversion of scanned topographic map/engineering drawing images, saving the output into drawing files, which can then be opened with any .dxf capable CAD program. (Five other output formats are also supported.) Vectorization is fast, and a 1-click thinning and verctorizing option is included for simple images. Two samples are included for testing and the product comes with sufficient online documentation.
